We Learned From You

About

"Woman" meant something very different for me growing up than it does in my college's queer community. We are constantly talking about gender, breaking it down, and analyzing what it means in terms of identity and power relations.

Though I have never had a single conversation with people back home about what it means to be a woman, we all know what it means to us.

For us:
Woman is what we saw and continue to see in our mothers, our aunts, our sisters, friends, partners, and mentors.

Woman is strength, it is struggle, it is perseverance in facing whatever life throws at us.

We are loud. We are caring. We are resilient. We can be trans, or not. We represent every race. We are proud of our culture. We are everywhere from femme to butch to feminine to masculine and everything and nothing in between. We are who we are because of and despite the amount of money we make. We all hold the right to be spiritual in our own way. Despite being victimized we will never be victims. We are women who learned from you and defined ourselves because the one thing we will always be is strong.

(Though those who know me understand that I am fairly genderqueer, Woman for me means being proud of my gender as both masculine and feminine. I understand that some of the things I reblog may be created by people who do not identify as Women. I am not trying to force anyone into this category and respect how people self-identify. I have chose not to refer only to female identity because I am inspired by how people embody strength in their own gender despite how they identify.) Ask me anything
